The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross is excited to offer this virtual icon writing retreat led by Kara Gillette, founder of Sophia Icon Studio.

Iconography – the painting or “writing” of icons – is a living tradition and perhaps the oldest form of Christian sacred art. It has been an integral part of the worship and mystical life of Christians since apostolic times. Tradition holds that St. Luke was the first iconographer. The artistic and spiritual language of icons developed over centuries and is carefully preserved through the tradition of recreating sacred images. We will use both traditional and modern materials (acrylic paints), techniques, and practices to create a sacred icon of Mary Magdalene. All materials and instructions will be mailed to you before the start of the program. Each day will include morning Bible Study, worship and reflection along with creating art within community.

This retreat is geared toward those with no previous experience as well as experienced iconographers!
